Never has a track sounded so forward-thinking and cutting-edge while also seeming like the best post-punk, darkwave-dancefloor anthem that somehow got lost in time. Perhaps it owes something to the cyclical nature of music, that the fickle wheel of fad and fashion turns in such a way that yesterday’s nostalgic sound is today’s future classic. Maybe it is infectious because of Kat Von D’s striking vocal presence. Or, it could be so unavoidable because she knows the best people to collaborate with and understands just how to write killer songs.
Whatever the reason, and I suspect that the answer lies in somewhere in all of the above options, “Truth in Reverse” is one of those songs that might come barrelling out of the left-field, the alternative, and underground realms, but it has the potential to overturn the mainstream musical landscape. In that regard, this song, like “Illusion” before it, is a sonic Trojan horse, sneaking into the more chart-orientated realms and suddenly bursting onto the scene to overturn expectations and change the landscape.
So, no matter which camp you fall into—modern dance-popster or post-punk pioneer, chart aficionado or gothic minion, cutting-edge synth fan or darkwave surfer—there is plenty to be found in these liquid synth-scapes and propulsive bass lines, skittering ebbs of percussion, and flows of groove and dark grace that will keep everyone happy.
Young or old, retro fan or cutting-edge explorer, disco queen or king of the nighttime world, you have just found your new favorite anthem.
