Music is cyclical; the signature sounds from the past always seem to find their way into modern music. It’s just the way of the world; not nothing, but certainly very little, is new under the sun, yet still new, interesting and original gets made, such is an artists ability to blend familiarity with freshness to keep the sonic ball rolling. I mention this because it didn’t seem that long ago that contemporary artists were echoing the sound of Laurel Canyon folkies and the rock-and-roll grooves of the ’70s, or the synth-pop sounds of the following decade, and although I’m not implying that Kate Loraine is in any way plagiarizing the pop-rock moves of the early 2000’s here, but it is fair to say that ‘pieces of me’ would have fitted right into the soundtrack of that decade.
But why not? This heady and vibrant blend of infectious pop and, raw, expansive rock-and-roll guitars, that infectious sound forged between pop and a hard place has always been a winning combination. And so too it is here.
‘pieces of me’ wanders between rhythmic undertones and explosive choruses; it juxtaposes abrasive guitars with accessible grooves, poise with power, and the vocals, in particular, are what turn this big tune into a stadium anthem. But if the music is trackable through the chronologies of musical style (which is true of all music), the lyrics, a musing on heartbreak, rage, and the art of rebuilding yourself in the wake of a broken relationship, are timeless, poignant and utterly relatable.
Not all music has to change the world; some just needs to make your day. ‘pieces of me’ certainly does that.
