Never has a warning about complacency and whatever the opposite of carpe diem is, sounded so sublime, so sweetly seductive, so intimate, than it does on this new one from Floridian singer-songwriter, Kevin Driscoll.
As always, the sparsity of his music, essentially picked acoustic guitar, his captivating voice, and a few additional delicate beats and deft sonics, speak volumes, a reminder that if you get the basics right, you don’t have to resort to studio gimmicks or layering up the music to within an inch of its life. In fact, with a voice this hushed, this hazy, this whispered, this quietly compelling, it is best if you give it enough space to do its job. As such, the vocals become far from just something to accompany the song but the whole point.
And, as he reels off his poetic turns of phrase, the message is clear. Go for it! Dreams are there to be chased. Procrastination is the enemy. We only pass this way once, so take chances, build the life you want. Build the things that make you happy. Sure, it is easier said than done, but that doesn’t mean he is wrong.
“Someday Got Away” has its roots in a chance meeting with Moira Chicilo at a songwriting workshop, which in turn became a long-distance collaboration and thus birthed the song. And, interestingly, those who hear the echoes of the likes of Joni Mitchell, Bruce Cockburn, or Leonard Cohen in the songs’ rootsy, dulcet tones should not be surprised to find that all three, like Chicilo herself, are Canadian. Make of that what you will.
Another absorbing song from Kevin Driscoll, and another timeless and timely message.
