A lot of bands and artists sound like something that has gone before. More often than not, they sound like a poor version of something that wasn’t that groundbreaking in the first place. And even when they claim to sound like something interesting, they rarely put their sonic money where their musical mouth is – “No, of course you don’t sound like Kate Bush, how could you. No one does!”
But a lot is going on in Kevin Driscoll’s latest single, “You Could Have Told Me” that reminds me of Talking Heads…and that is not to be sniffed at. In fact, not only does he make music that echoes with their creativity, but the song also reminds me, not least vocally, of the much-overlooked Tulipomania, only less crushingly claustrophobic. Those to put together make for a very heady experience indeed.
Guitars skitter, beats do only what is necessary to keep time, and Driscoll speaks-sings in a loud whisper (oxymoron alert…but you’ll see what I mean), sounding both vulnerable and slightly pissed-off.
And maybe he is the latter, being that it is a song about reappraising life in the light of how you have navigated its tricks and turns thus far, and learning to do things differently in the future, it’s exactly the right tone to adopt. It’s about seeing the light after a relationship breaks down, but so are most songs when you boil them down, aren’t they? But with this one, you believe him, and that sincerity is something most artists can’t pull off.
