Kevin Honold - Honey (Dogs of Thunder Music)

11 January 2026

I’m not sure what it is about that intro, but as it shuffles, gently grooving, a wave of folk-pop loveliness that sets the song in motion, it feels as if you have been listening to it half your life. Not in a plagiaristic or copycat sort of way; it’s just doing something both wonderfully adventurous and brilliantly nostalgic that fires off the happy sonic synapses in the brain. Proof that it is doing something brilliant, something that balances the fresh and the familiar, something that is comfortable yet reative, something that, given the passage of enough time, will, perhaps, join the ranks of the classic.

And that, as I said, is just the intro!

This celebration of the love that he has for his wife (also released yesterday, on her birthday – man, having a song written about you, especially one this great, beats a card and a box of choccies, any day, this really means something) is simply gorgeous. It is light and spacious, yet deep and meaningful. And through the addition of lots of gossamer sonic layering, from drifting trumpets to buoyant beats, pulsing bass lines, and an effortless, infectious groove, it moves from the delicate to the deft over its four-minute journey. And, as it reaches its conclusion, if you don’t have a smile on your face, then see a cardiologist as there is something wrong with your heart.

But oh boy, if someone wrote me a song this personal, this beautiful, this brilliant, I would never expect a birthday present, ever again.
