As the wave of technical metal breaks on the rocks of a more progressive shore, the sound this creative collision, such a profound meeting of worlds, is found echoing through Kids in Decay’s music. For, as “Dark Tetrad” proves only too well, theirs is music where opposites attract, where the more intense and angst-driven sound of the metal world is tempered by those more changeable and dynamic progressive realms. In return, that more brutal sound prevents those progressive urges from becoming too indulgent. It’s a fine line, and Kids in Decay walk it with the deftest of footwork.
In this song, it is easy to see the connection between metal’s (and indeed prog-rock’s) more ornate style and the intricacies of the classical world. This is music which seems composed rather than jammed, carefully intertwined rather than rocked out in the practice room – as is the wont of the heavier music makers.
But there is more to it than even that, more to it than what meets the eye, or should that be ear, with most hard and heavy music. Not only do Kids in Decay weave digital creativity through their analog artistry, they also call on brutal vocals to match the sweeter deliveries, build dynamics that run from lulling interludes to searing anthemic highs and blend nu-metal coolness with old-school soundscaping.
Kids in Decay seem to be writing a new chapter in modern music. Rock and roll for a new age? I’d say so.
