Kipani - All My Friends (Elton Audio Records)

3 February 2024

“All My Friends” is a song that most of us can relate to, certainly those of us who have a few years behind us and have been around the block a couple of times. This latest single from Kipani captures that feeling of growing up and growing apart from your friends. It happens for all the right reasons, family, work, relocation, relationships, or just a natural growing apart. Still, it does cause you to reflect on memories and shared experiences with people you once thought would be in your life forever.

There is a good reason why the band calls their music “Diary-pop,” it is intimate, personal, and confessional, but in a positive and upbeat way. “All My Friends” might talk about the loss of past relationships, but it does so from the point of understanding that this is just the natural cycle, that as one chapter ends, another begins. It is slightly nostalgic, naturally, but it says thanks for the memories, “I’m happy for you,” rather than mourns any loss of friendship. It’s time to move on; it’s as simple as that.

Musically, they set this reflective piece to a perfect blend of perky pop and more driven indie. It peaks with a wonderfully anthemic chorus and bristles with an energy that pushes almost into sonic euphoria.

Thoughtful, deftly written, brilliantly delivered, relatable, and full of groove- that’s how you do pop!
