La Need Machine - The Mountain (Lead Backed Vinyl Music)

26 August 2024

Even if you were one of those people still clinging to the old notions of genres and sonic labels, in the face of La Need Machine’s mercurial mix, you would have abandoned such an approach long ago. I know I did. So, if you are one of those people who like their music neatly boxed and made without going over the lines of sonic demarcation, this might not be for you. If, however, you find the idea of a band mixing and matching and melding and molding any sound and style that catches their eye into a unique signature sound, “The Mountain,” and, to be honest, everything that has come before it, will be your thing.

This is the sound of a band that has thrown the rule book away, if they were ever aware of the existence of one. Running, at least initially, on a folky Americana groove, the band pulls off a fantastic trick. By adding both heavy guitars and ethereal vocals to the sonic proceedings, by ebbing and flowing between lovely lulling lows and searing sonic crescendoes, they add both sonic weight and musical lightness to the song – simultaneously. And that is some juxtaposition, quite an attraction of opposites, and a brilliant sonic oxymoron to perform. But they do. Fantastically.

But that is the joy of La Need Machine. Not only do they mix genres in a pretty unexpected fashion, but they also take the resulting sound to even more surprising and expected destinations.

“The Mountain” is many things, not least of which is a song built on deep and philosophical lyrics, but perhaps most importantly, it is the sound of the musical landscape gently evolving.
