None other than Carrie Fisher once said, “Take your broken heart, make it into art.” And that is precisely the motivation behind this, the fifth single, from Lauren Ash. We’ve all been there; relationships end, sometimes they end both unexpectedly and crash spectacularly, and as we crawl out of the wreckage, we have several choices. We can feel sorry for ourselves, we can try to get revenge, we can blame ourselves, or we can turn all of those feelings into something artistic and brilliant. Lauren Ash has chosen the latter option.
“Whiplash” is the sound of someone getting even by pouring all of her feelings into a brilliant and unavoidable song – one that drives along on brooding basslines and incendiary guitars, thunderous beats, and a tirade of honest and heartfelt lyricism. One that also blends the metaphorical relationship car crash with memories of an actual one, the two being mixed together, blurring the lines between emotion and physical tragedy.
It’s a healthy thing to do. What better way to get all that pent-up energy, all that heartache, and feelings of being used or let down than releasing a song that is both a personal exorcism and a relatable tale? Surely, after such an emotional purge, how can you not be ready to move on with your life?
And, I would hate to be the person who has to own up to being the reason that the song was written, someone who now has a personal and highly public soundtrack to how they have behaved.
Brutal, not to mention brilliant.
