Lee Miller Matsos - Change (self-released)

2 August 2026

“Change,” the new one from Lee Miller Matsos, is a song with many sonic moods. Not just moods, but various pacing and variable poise, clever timing, and swirling vibes; it is changeable (ha) and unsecondguessable. The fact that it can move through so many styles and sounds in three and a half minutes almost makes it some sort of progressive pop, but let’s not get bogged down with genres…we could be here all day.

Starting on a two-note bass groove reminiscent of Lou Reed’s wild side excursion, it slowly moves through more complex struts and shuffling beats, shimmering guitar lines, chilled middle eight interludes, and finally grooves out the way it came in. That’s a lot of chopping and changing, but despite its wayward ways, each chapter feels naturally part of the nuanced whole, moving parts within a consistent overall direction of travel.

It isn’t a surprise to find that Lee also works in opera and musical theatre, as like much of the music found there, ‘Change’ is rich in subtlety and suppleness, twisting and turning to tell its story as much through the sonic sentiments as the lyrical delivery.

Moody and marvellous, soul-searching and sassy, this might be my first taste of Lee Miller Matsos, but it certainly won’t be my last.
