Lemon is the sound of a story playing out, the next chapter in a beloved sonic tale, the latest episode in a groovesome narrative that has never let us down. It’s also the thrill of a wave that has been swept along on the fashionable tides flowing from sixties psych-rock to funky seventies groove rock through eighties power-pop and baggy sound takes in the cooler fringes of Brit-pop and then crashes into today’s music scene. A sound that echoes everyone from The Stone Roses and Primal Scream and from The Second Summer of Love to that beatific Balearic beat.
Keep Shining does all of that, and does so effortlessly. From the funky groove of opener “Love Can Take You Places”, it is a trippy magic carpet ride through euphoric climes and irresistible rhythms. This “Nedchester Sound,” which is the perfect tag for Lemon, is both nostalgic and authentic, but also creative and forward-thinking, and this is obviously a band happy to pick up the torch and reignite these cool sounds for the modern music fan, one who is both musically discerning and ready to hit the dance floor.
“Music is My Lifeline” is both fresh and familiar, a classic sound being taken on a new journey. “Power” finds the band blending space and understatement with poignant power chords and infectious sonic swagger, and “Let’s Go” is a slightly subtle, totally contagious helping of funky vibes.
The clever creative footwork that the band employs sees them appealing to the older dance-rock crowd from back in the day as readily as they do the young indie kid looking for something new…everything is cyclical after all and Keep Shining is a reminder that nothing this great ever goes out of fashion, it just evolves into it’s next form and sets about winning over the next generation of music fan. Which this will, without question.
