Dream pop with bite? Indie music fuelled by cinematic sparkle? That is the conundrum found at the heart of Lexytron. If the former genre is music made from drifting atmospheres and shimmering soundscapes, the latter is more about riff and groove, then it is at the point where the sonic waters of one lap up on the creative shores of the other that you find Lexytron making their music.
Something New is a truly genre-hopping album, and while the above serves as a starting point, it is just that, a mere point of sonic embarkation. If “Kiss Me Quick” conforms to such a creative collision point, a gentle, mid-paced indie piece cloaked in shimmering sonics, by the time you find yourself immersed in “Disco Jenny’s” boisterous beats and island vibes (I’m oddly thinking of a contemporary take on Kid Creole and the Coconuts, for those old enough to remember), you realise that anything could happen. And indeed will.
“Every Little Thing” is a soaring musical-theatre meets alt-pop creation. “Is It Because?” sees them brilliantly reimagine the ’80s power ballad, and “Stone Cold” is the sort of song that Kate Bush might have come up with if she were just getting started now. (From Kid Creole to Kate Bush in the space of just a handful of songs, that speaks volumes about what they think of genres, labels, tags, and demarcations.)
The first few singles from this New Zealand duo certainly got them noticed, but with an album that showcases much invention, mass appeal, brilliant humour, and a refreshing honesty and originality, it is safe to say that the future is looking very bright for them.
