Lisa/Liza - Ocean Path (Orindal Records)

9 March 2026

The act of revisiting one’s earliest creative impulses is often an exercise in confrontation, yet on ‘Ocean Path,’ the artist known as Lisa/Liza approaches her formative years with a profound and steady tenderness. This collection, released as a curated cassette, serves as a chronological map of a young musician’s developing interiority. Sourced from various home recordings captured during her teens and early twenties, the record bypasses the high-gloss artifice of the studio in favor of a raw, atmospheric intimacy. Liza Victoria has essentially published a series of letters to her future self, documenting the quiet, steady process of becoming.

The record opens with “Summer’s Dust,” a title that perfectly evokes the hazy, particulate nature of memory. There is a skeletal beauty to these initial recordings, where the hiss of the tape and the resonant space of the room function as additional instruments. As the sequence moves into “Looking Glass,” the listener is invited into a world of reflective isolation. Victoria’s vocal delivery is unshielded and direct, possessing a fragility that is anchored by a surprising structural confidence. These are not merely sketches; they are fully realized emotional environments that prioritize mood and honesty over traditional pop artifice.

The center of the collection, “Gamble,” holds a specific historical weight as one of Victoria’s very first recordings. It captures a pivotal moment of artistic bravery; the decision to hit the record button and share a private world with an unknown audience. There is a sense of hopeful uncertainty in the melody, a quality that continues through the sharper edges of “Shark’s Teeth.” Even in these early stages, Victoria’s songwriting avoids the obvious, opting instead for a sophisticated, observational lyricism that mirrors the natural world. The threads of love and displacement that define her later, more established work are already visible here in their most concentrated form.

“Then You Shall See,” acts as a retrospective benediction. It reinforces the album’s central theme: the idea that the path of a creator is a continuous roll forward, encouraged by the friends and different lives encountered along the way. While Victoria remains the sole architect of these songs, the mastering by Keith J. Nelson ensures that the disparate recording sources are woven into a cohesive sonic narrative. The production preserves the breadcrumbs of a developing intuition that Victoria mentions in her reflections, allowing the listener to feel the passage of time between each track.

‘Ocean Path’ is a work of immense courage and quietude. It is a rare gift to witness an artist holding their younger self with such pride and lack of cynicism. By giving these early recordings a permanent place to exist, Lisa/Liza has created more than just a retrospective; she has produced a sound poem about the necessity of persistence. It is an intellectually rigorous look at the archaeology of the self, suggesting that the most authentic art is often found in the moments when we are simply trying to find a way to keep going.
