In the current political climate, one that often feels both static due to the entrenchment of ideologies and a white knuckle roller coaster ride of uncertainty, it is very easy to point fingers, to assign blame, and to take sides. As if things were as clear-cut as a pantomime, the good guys in white, the bad guys in black, as if there was really that much of a difference between the various powers that be that govern our lives.
Lomens are smart enough to understand that, and so they can take a more neutral position, see things from the mindset of the everyday, bipartisan, man in the street, and write about how the winds of change, not to mention political will, batter and bruise them daily.
To this end, their latest single, “Kinetic Currency,” talks about the struggles of everyday life from a more holistic, more general point of view, one that no matter what affiliations you choose, we all recognize as being our lot, at least the majority of us.
Wielding big guitar riffs and throwing around some wonderfully ornate playing that sometimes pushes into an almost progressive rock realm, they build a powerful sonic argument. Searing crescendos are surfed, lush lulls are languished in, and the song ebbs and flows between such sonic extremes. It’s a masterclass in how you use dynamics in the modern rock environment.
Loman’s has always been a band to watch, but after a few smart changes in the lineup, a few clever additions, and a slight reshuffle, as “Kinetic Currency” proves, this is a band whose hour has come, where everything seems to have finally clicked into its perfect place.
