Most artists, those who are in the business for the right reasons at least, are pursuing the act of writing a great song. That’s the goal. And whilst songwriting, like any skill, is something to be honed down by a continual venture along an upward learning curve, perhaps the answer lies in the past. Perhaps you have already written a great song, discarded and forgotten about it, and there it lies, ready for reappraisal by an older, wiser you.
Having recently unearthed a collection of recordings from some songwriting sessions in the 90s Anthony Vanger aka Lord Vanger has been breathing new life into those older songs. The result is The Box, his seventh studio album and a set of songs that perfectly blend the past and present.
The latest single from it, “Sky,” is a deft pop-rock song that is both immediately accessible and also swathed in delicate sonics. Heartfelt and emotionally charged, full of gently funk-infused grooves and poised pop addictions, it muses on those fleeting feelings of joy and euphoria of new love and the crash and disenchantment that often follow as illusions are seen through and reality begins to kick in.
So, the question is this. Has Lord Vanger already written that great song that all artists aspire to? Well, “Sky” indeed suggests so, and even if this single is not the one that is going to turn him into a household name, it certainly signposts that the song he is looking for may already have seen the light of day, may be found within his newly discovered box of sonic delights.
