If you ever wondered what the incidental music would sound like as you watched The Man With No Name ride through a blasted post-apocalyptic scrubland into the glare of a nuclear sunset on an undead horse, ‘Bourbon,’ the new one from Los Tres Mortales, would be a close fit.
Okay, that’s just me being a bit hyperbolic and rhetorical with my words, as the song’s narrative seems to be more about the timeless, real-world evils of the demon drink, which I guess is obvious from the title. But with the heightened drama of the scything guitars, the relentless roar of the underpinning bass and the pummeling drums, it is easy to fall into such imagined other worlds. Or maybe that’s just me!
There is a great use of dual vocals, a call-and-response conversation that lifts the song into more rarefied realms, not merely another alt-rock rampage or gothic gloomfest, but adding a unique element rarely found in music made in such dark and delirious, not to mention driven and danceable realms.
But these three mortals (or, depending on your translation, perhaps killers) know what they are doing; as members of The Wake and Sunshine Blind, between them they have been adding to the canon of such shaded and delicious music for many years. With ‘Bourbon’, that contribution continues to grow, but it also sets the stage for new sonic adventures to play out from this coming together of two highly respected and brilliantly creative bands.
