Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History of Gary Young & Pavement (Independent Project Records)

15 January 2026

Independent Project Records’ latest release, ‘Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History of Gary Young & Pavement,’ is far more than a conventional soundtrack, it is a sprawling, affectionate, and occasionally chaotic portrait of one of indie rock’s most unconventional figures. Clocking in at a generous runtime and spanning rare archival recordings, live performances, and newly composed material, the two-album collection mirrors the mercurial spirit of Gary Young himself: unpredictable, irreverent, and endlessly inventive.

From the opening moments, the compilation establishes its own cadence, veering between lo-fi rock, Stockton hardcore punk, ambient interludes, and improvisational oddities that feel pulled directly from Young’s late-night sessions. Early tracks from Fall of Christianity, CRLLL, and The Authorities situate the listener firmly in the gritty, fiercely independent ‘80s and ‘90s California underground, revealing the formative sounds that would shape Young’s sensibilities long before Pavement became synonymous with slacker rock. The frenetic energy of these bands, tightly wound yet full of room for detours, provides a startling contrast to the meditative, almost pastoral textures of some of Young’s later solo work and ‘Hospital’ recordings (Big Cat Records, 1994).

For Pavement devotees, the soundtrack is a treasure trove. The inclusion of “Summer Babe (Live May 19, 1992)” captures the band in a rare, intimate live moment, brimming with raw immediacy, while “Please Be Happy (For Us),” a final collaboration between Young, Stephen Malkmus, and Scott Kannberg, feels like a bittersweet reunion: playful, slightly unhinged, and profoundly human. These tracks demonstrate the unpolished brilliance that defined Young’s contributions as both drummer and producer, highlighting a musical philosophy that prized spontaneity, humor, and personality over perfection.

Equally compelling are the score contributions from Edward W. Dahl and Noah Georgeson, whose atmospheric pieces bridge the archival recordings, lending a cinematic cohesion to what might otherwise be a wildly eclectic collection. Ambient textures and delicate instrumental vignettes echo the idiosyncratic sensibilities of their subject, reinforcing the soundtrack’s sense of place and narrative while allowing the listener to traverse decades of music history with a surprising fluidity.

What sets ‘Louder Than You Think’ apart is its willingness to embrace contradiction. The record is at once nostalgic and forward-looking, chaotic and meticulously curated, intimate yet expansive. It captures the grit and charm of Stockton’s underground scene while celebrating the idiosyncratic genius of Young, whose humor, eccentricity, and occasional chaos are inseparable from his artistry. The compilation doesn’t sanitize or smooth over these contradictions; it celebrates them, giving each track room to breathe, stumble, or soar. The physical release exemplifies IPR’s meticulous aesthetic, in true Independent Project fashion, it is a tactile, visually engaging complement to the music; a physical object that embodies the label’s ethos as much as the collection of tracks it houses.

‘Louder Than You Think’ succeeds because it honors its subject without compromise. It is as idiosyncratic, joyous, and occasionally bewildering as Gary Young himself, providing context, narrative, and sound for anyone seeking to understand the man behind Pavement’s early lo-fi sound. For longtime fans, it is a thrilling excavation of rare and unreleased material; for those encountering Young for the first time, it is an invitation into the untamed, hilarious, and surprisingly poignant world of a true original. In every sense, this soundtrack is a celebration of independence, eccentricity, and the messy brilliance of making music on one’s own terms.
