I’ve always admired Love Ghost’s ability to flit about the musical landscape. Although they were birthed by the forces of grunge and alt-rock, from this solid base, they have travelled far, visiting metal and pop-punk as readily as they have found themselves immersed in rap-rock, hip-hop, and other urban crossovers.
I’m not sure if it is a case of who they chose to collaborate drives their final sound or whether they know the sound they are searching for and just find the best people to work with to achieve such an end. However they get there, the process pays dividends.
It is when they are sailing closer to their formative sound, as they do here, that they tick the most boxes for me. I’m not knocking their many sonic excursions, in fact more people should follow their lead, it’s just a personal preference. But, even when they are on such familiar territory as we find them on “Do You Like Me Now?,” you can hear the experiences and expertise garnered from those other creative adventures colouring their sound. Travel broadens the mind. Comfort zones are for wimps…you know what I’m saying.
Hooking up with Cinnamon Babe is a masterstroke, and together, they confidently stomp and swagger over a sort of nu-metal landscape, one that embraces vocals that, at turns, scream at the sky, offer reflective lulls and blend rap dexterity into rock salvos.
Guitars growl, drums thunder, bass lines drop sonic depth charges, and electronic sheens soften edges—but only very slightly—as Love Ghost signs their name on yet another musical style.
