Blending the shaded tones of the gothic realm with the anthemic sweep of more classical climes, “A Heart Cries,” the new one from Lovelorn Dolls, is a big song—a BIG song! As you would expect from this Belgian duo, based on their track record, they don’t hold back—when they “go for it,” they really “go for it.”
And that is what we find them doing here. The result? A song that is both wide-screen and cinematic in its appeal and full of stygian mystique as it delivers. They deftly blend rock guitars with synth sensations and old-school analogue moves with cutting-edge digital grooves, and their dark design ticks as many boxes for fans of symphonic metal and underground darkwave-dance as it does for fans of the tried-and-tested gothic sound.
Their fourth, indeed forthcoming album (I’ve made that joke before, haven’t I?) Deadtime Stories, from which this single is taken, marks a return to the sonic fray after a five-year hiatus. And on the strength of this, it is evident that they have lost none of their bite. I would say that they are as edgy and infectious, melodic and menacing, powerful and perfectly poised as ever.
The gothic sound and scene have been with us for a long time now, and like all genres, it needs to move with the times, keep things fresh, and moving forward. And if you want to know what that sounds like, give “A Heart Cries” another spin. And another. And another. And repeat.
