If you were to boil down the message at the heart of this latest release from Lucas Pasley, it is this: love is unconditional. That’s it. “Laissez-Faire Love” reminds us that those we love must be allowed to be who they are and that we shouldn’t try to change them. It is only through the freedom and lack of judgment that we give them that help them to lead the life the way they see fit; only then will they truly become who they need to be, who they were always destined to be. If we truly love them, we must love everything about them. And if that means that their journey is something complex and unpredictable, so be it. All we can do is catch them when they fall, cheer them on when they are winning, and love them all the same.
That spirit of freedom is echoed in the music that drives the song: a loose and wilfully lazy rhythm, a spacious beat, and chilled acoustic guitars, along with some sliding sonics. A spiraling, gypsy violin and a wonky trumpet breeze through just add to the feeling that this could easily be a beach campfire jam session, and that is it. A straightforward sound for a message of fundamental truth.
It’s a brilliant celebration of “live and let live,” not to mention “love and let love,” attitudes that are in short supply in the world today— a poignant and timely message delivered by the most laid-back music you could ever wish to encounter.
