The most remarkable thing about this remarkable new single from Mahta is how it not only sounds vastly different from anything you have heard before and does so to the point that it essentially builds itself its own sonic world to inhabit. Brave, perhaps even reckless, is the person who tries to stick a tag or label on “I Don’t Mind.”
That’s not to say there is anything overly avant-garde at work; you can pick out defined sounds, snippets of genres, and echoes of familiar styles, but so wonderfully are they woven together, so unexpectedly and unusually do we find sounds juxtaposed, that this can only be described as unique.
Indie grooves act as the platform for succulent horns, banks of harmonies drift over pop accessibility, banks of sonics dance cheek-by-jowl with dynamic use of space, soulfulness softens rock and roll energies, and so on… It is the sound of the broad and brilliant music world coming together to create a unified theory of musical co-operation. Post-genre and then some!
You can spot the individual building blocks, but the overall sonic architecture is so beguiling, so shimmering, so brilliantly done that not only can you not see the joins, you hardly know what to call it.
But that is the art of moving music forward, isn’t it? Making something familiar enough to reel them in, yet fresh enough to blow their minds? something that appeals to many and which blends the intellect of the cultish with the infectiousness of the commercial.
