With a name like Master Musicians of Bukkake, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. It could be a joke, or it could actually have some connection to THE MASTER MUSICIANS OF JAJOUKA, the brilliant Moroccan musical tribe that was obviously an inspiration. However, after listening, I was convinced that the name fits perfectly (and it turned out to be the latter, by the way).
The group appears to be lead by RANDALL DUNN, who is known for his recordings with EARTH and SUNN O))), with a cast of musicians from bands like BURNING WITCH, Earth and the country Turkey. Needless to say, the music is heavy and foreboding with a strong Middle Eastern influence.
Like their namesake from the village of Jajouka, the music has a hypnotic, ritualistic element that conjures whirling dervishes and myths of gods drawn in clouds of opium smoke. But there is also a sinister element akin to the droning, seductive madness of THROBBING GRISTLE. The tracks are ominous, cavernous, seemingly improvised celebrations of pagan glory. In fact, Totem Two would be the perfect soundtrack for a sex magic ceremony that ends in sacrifice and cannibalism. It’s unnerving, beautiful, creepy and full of debaucherous ecstasy.
