Pujol - Bonedaddy 7" (Jeffery Drag)

8 February 2011

Fresh darling of the seemingly endless crop of great rock frothing out of Nashville (and TN in general), Daniel Pujol drops two diamond solid tunes on 7”. Recorded at Battletapes, infamous studio where such golden Nashy bands like Bad Cop , JEFF the Brotherhood and Turbofruits have worked, Bonedaddy shares the same casual but cutting genius tone as the aforementioned. Seriously there must be something amazing in the Kool-aid at Battletapes because every single thing I hear from there goes straight to my heart. Bonedaddy is equal parts rock, naive psychedelia with a skein of chill but ingratiating punk attitude that is very distinctly Southern. This first piece of vinyl from fresh Nashville upstart DIY label Jeffery Drag is a really hot indication of the great things to come.

Title-track side A starts off with a joyous snicker, giving way to a propulsive and hugely detuned flammy drum doing the Spector , while a piano drones single-notedly and guitars appear and disappear incidentally. Out of nowhere, a shotgun? Someone falling down stairs? The vocals are pleasantly crunched and doubled.. this is some proper feelgood shit, a mini road trip for the brain, you can see the road rolling on and on with Bonedaddy on the mixtape. Those drums, those huge huge drums in the sky that make you feel like you’re cruising in the sun. Pujol’s songwriting is effortless sounding and immediately engaging, with tracks like this it’s no wonder he’s been garnering the attention he has, Jack White connection notwithstanding.

Side B takes the piss with tongue in cheek. Sounding right away like a contemporized Zappa ‘s Ruben & The Jets album, complete with goofy vocals. The song itself is ingratiating enough to be solid despite the joke. Sardonic and sneering, “Get N’ Hard” pokes fun at overly serious zeitgeist demands and overwrought hipster bands currently wanking off publicly across America. At least that’s my take on it.

This would be a real treasure in anyone’s 45 box. Make sure you snap one up from Jeffrey Drag, because of it’s brilliance, also because all proceeds from the 7” will go towards helping out the captains of Battle Tapes studio who have “acquired some large hospital bills due to very unfortunate circumstances.”
