There has always been something primal about MatAre’s music. Not in the sense of it being tribal or shamanic, primitive or ancient; no, this is nothing if not music that resonates with and of the here-and-now. Perhaps spiritual might be a better word, although again, that is a very loaded word.
What I’m trying to say is that his music is transportative and connective, drawing us closer to, for want of a better word, the source of it all. As his warm and welcoming voice dances over the shimmering guitars and hazy synth sonics, he reminds us that we are all one, that our loves and longings are a collective emotion, our feelings for the environment around us are those of a lost child for a half-remembered mother. And whilst the modern age may have taught us that such feelings are childish and naive, what other answer could there be?
This chiming, and indeed charming, track is the perfect first taste of his new album Extinction Burst which, if this single is anything to go by, will prove to be both entertaining and enlightening, a collection of cool indie licks and mellifluous sounds, coastal inspirations and shoreline dreams, warm weaves of music and poignant, purposeful lyrics. And when dark clouds seem to be gathering on every horizon, what better than an artist who deals in sunshine sonics and lyrical positivity?
