MatAre - Perfect Constant (OnCue Records)

2 May 2024

If you were to liken the passage of this song to the passing of the seasons, then throughout its sonic year, you, the listener, would experience all manner of climactic moods and seasonal shifts. “Perfect Constant” is one of those songs that is both wonderfully consistent and yet always evolving, much like the seasons themselves, the passing of which is seen best as an overall event rather than one day at a time. It is perhaps once you have run the full gamut of music that you truly appreciate the experience.

And so here MatAre takes us by the hand in a gentle, shimmering spring, the song full of chiming, and indeed charming, sonics, a gentle blossoming of sounds and ideas before the guitars kick in and those ideas become a riot of, summer-soaked blend of vibrancy and cool, contrast and compliment. From here, the song ebbs and flows between various delicacies and delights before shedding its sonic leaves and drifting out of earshot.

It is clear that MatAre is a very astute artist, able to deftly and dexterously combine gentle Americana deliveries with more new wave vibes and alt-country textures with full-on rock tones. It’s a clever thing to be able to do, requiring a constant conjuring and combining of sounds, an ever-changing balancing act that creates these beautiful dynamics.

This is my first taste of MatAre and his music, but I can tell you this for free: it won’t be my last.
