MatAre - When Alone (self-released)

20 January 2026

There is a very telling comment in the accompanying blurb for this latest single from Atlanta sonic dreamscaper MatAre, and it is this. When asked about the making of this self-contained release, he answered, “The project was intentionally kept small so that the focus would stay on the emotional space of the song rather than on collaboration as a concept.”

Now, that may seem an insignificant statement, but it gets to the heart of much that is wrong with modern music. In a world where big is better, where following fashion is the law, where marketability outranks artistry, the idea of an artist only concerning themself with perfecting the internal workings of a song rather than getting it oven ready for an already oversaturated market, worrying about its finesse and form instead of fretting about how it might be recieved, is such a rare and refreshing thing to find.

“When Alone” finds MatAre in his favourite place, building bridges between 80’s pop and modern soundscaping, between dream-pop’s poise and a more contemporary indie sound. As always, this ebbing and flowing between then and now, this blend of shimmering, slightly nostalgic pop and more resonant, more contemporary energies, is perfectly done.

MatAre demonstrates time and again that while the past is a brilliant place to find inspiration, the present, quite logically, is the only place that you can ever make music, and the future is the only place to aim for!
