Matt Kent - Orpheus (Orpheus Records)

24 May 2026

With his latest single, Matt Kent proves that even the most forward-thinking artists can still draw inspiration from the oldest stories, and so gives us “Orpheus,” an indie-pop and soul-infused single inspired by one of the most ancient of tales of star-crossed lovers, the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, reimagined here as a contemporary love song. After all, nothing ever really changes but the shoes, as they say, and such stories are as relevant and relatable today as they were way back when.

Built on rich blends of organ swells, the shimmering and unmistakable Rhodes sound, and the chime of more standard piano notes, the track moves with rhythmic fluidity, its wonderful dynamic anchored in the drums’ constant shift between power and poignancy. Funk undertones, neo-soul grooves, and trippy pop rhythms all run through the arrangement, creating a sound that feels simultaneously classic, reimagining everything from the golden age of soul to the 90’s R&B boom, and refreshingly modern.

For all the song’s clever sonic layering of tone and texture, the vocals remain the undeniable focal point. Kent’s lead delivery is front and center, confident and clear, but just as important is the subtler presence of a gospel-infused choral line that seeps into every space of the song. These voices do not simply support the melody; they transform the track into something spiritual, lifting, taking “Orpheus” beyond straightforward indie-pop into something cinematic, soulful, and smart.

A timeless tale in the most modern sonic trappings.
