Time passes, the world turns, and, without fail, songwriter Matthew Edwards (The Music Lovers, the Unfortunates, the Hairdressers) re-emerges from his normal life with new music. Released as likely the last gasp of his latest combo the Futurists, “Suit” and “Kindness” represent some of his most straightforwardly rocking songs to date. “You can’t pour soup into a suit,” Edwards sings with resignation on side A, “and I know, ‘cause I tried.” Isaac Bonnell’s spiraling guitar licks do their best to relieve his melancholy. Edwards part tries to part the clouds on “Kindness,” admittedly over the crunchy six-strings that “I can feel the kindness coming in.” You’re not sure whether you can believe him or not, frankly, but one thing you can count on: these are two of the best rock songs you’ll hear all year.
