Bucolic. That’s the word. It so perfectly sums up Two Headed Horse’s general sonic demeanour and “Shimmer” in particular that I could just leave things at that. But that wouldn’t be much of a review, would it? Anyway, a song this lovely deserves more effort on my part.
There is a gentleness at the heart of the “Shimmer”, a deftness and delicacy wrought from an intertwining of a subtle beat and lilting, flowing guitar lines, chiming peripheral sonics and a hazy vocal trip. And, although as the song progresses, it builds in ornateness, a further gathering to it additional tones and textures, it never increases in weight or urgency or volume or velocity.
Indie-folk? Perhaps. Genres elude me and anyway have become increasingly unnecessary in a world where artists can cross musical boundaries and draw inspiration from anywhere across the musical landscape. But if the term indie folk implies a meeting of older, roots traditions and more contemporary pop-aware sounds, a taking of old world sounds into a bright new adventurous future, then this is undoubtedly it.
