Max Norton - The Breakers (self-released)

28 October 2025

Drummers who move on to front their own music usually bring a sense of pace and rhythmic poise to it that often isn’t there with singer-songwriters who have taken a more conventional route. And that is certainly true here, “The Breakers” Max Norton’s latest single indeed runs on a confident groove, the drums providing a leading momentum rather than driving from the back, not exactly a lead instrument in their own right but certainly adding an element to the song that is impossible to miss.

And once you have such an engine room at work, it is hard not to get pulled along in its wake…not just the listener but the other instruments too. Guitars boyantly charge, and chime and charm, and the relentless bass provides a simple, meditative, and elegant energy, and then, all Max is required to do is add a suitably compelling and energized vocal line, and the whole thing then seems to become more than the sum of its parts.

Part singer-songwriter, part indie, infectious in a pop-aware sort of way, and running on just enough rock drive that those who seek to slap labels on things can’t keep pace, it’s a song whose energy levels are pushed into the gently euphoric. And if you don’t believe me, I challenge any of you to put “The Breakers” on, crank up the volume, and not find yourself dancing around the room like a loon before the first chorus kicks in.

Go on, try it, see what happens!
