Who’s up for an urban, alt-rock-pop, bossa-nova, grime anthem? No, well, you’d be missing out on something a bit special. One of the great things about the modern, post-genre world is that the tribalism and demarcations of earlier times have been lost to the sonic winds, and music-makers, artists, and creatives are free to find inspiration wherever they like, infuse their music with sounds and styles garnered from across the musical landscape. Genres have fallen, tribes scattered to the winds, and freedom of musical expression reigns supreme.
And, I’m glad that it has, because without it, a song like “all over the world” from Manchester’s Meta City Future would be hard to imagine in the world of before, one where pigeon-holes and tags, labels and lines of precise generic demarcation were the norm.
Taken from the EP MCFI this infectious yet edgy single is a blend of soulful licks and hip-hop basslines, *Finola*s street-pop vocal deliveries, and smart underground R&B grooves. It wanders between lighter, effervescent dance vibes and more intense urban, trip-rock sonics, all the while reminding us that we should be digging deeper into the foundations of this shallow, materialistic world, look further, explore beyond, allowing ourselves the space to be who we are, never being afraid to do what it takes to be who we want to be, no matter what others think.
This is the sound of an indie pop song undergoing modern, more underground treatments. The message remains timeless, but the sonics have been updated to create something more relevant to the cutting-edge tastes of today’s discerning pop-picker. Underground, perhaps, but for how long?
