If there is a space where the shimmer and sheen of dream-pop borders a rawer, DIY indie-folk sound, “Light It Can Blind You” seems to be infused with and inspired by equal amounts of both. But more than that, it also drifts into some seductive cinematic territory, its ambient glow smoothing everything and softening the edges.
Even so, occasional piano arpeggios wander through, and a mournful trumpet adds simple yet satisfying sonic motifs, contributing to a sonic landscape that is poised and polished yet contoured and gently dynamic. Although the dream pop-alt-folk interface is not a new place for musicians to mine, with “Light It Can Blind You,” Mia Loucks has still managed to create something fresh and fantastic, something unorthodox, even by the loose and adventurous attitudes of such a genre, slightly off-kilter and outside of existing comfort zones, a song that is both sublimely beautiful and disarmingly beguiling.
And, for a song that feels as much woven from feelings as sonics, more particularly from an urge to confront the fear of joy; more specifically, the inner tension between light, happiness, and bliss, and the natural instinct to brace for its inevitable loss, the video is perfect, dreamlike and transient, Mia seeming ephemeral, just an echo of those emotions drifting through a sun-soaked vista, perhaps only a memory or a feeling made human.
It’s a gorgeous video and a memorable song, both of which put Mia Loucks high up on the “definitely one to watch” list.
