Michael Beck - Inner Truth (Nixi Music)

15 October 2024

As an early indication of just what sonic wonders and musical marvels Michael Beck’s album Surrender is going to reveal to the discerning listener when it sees the light of day in 2025, singles such as “Sovereignty,” “Tierra” and “Anymore” have done a masterful job. After all, if the purpose of an advanced single is to tease the audience and test the water, then these three gentle and meditative pieces of music have excelled at the task at hand. For anyone still in doubt, “Inner Truth” will seal the deal.

It is fair to say that Beck has an easily recognisable sonic fingerprint. It is less about a certain style and more about a quality: an ability to create gentle moods and project positive thoughts, a way of blending folk grace and exotic world sounds, of mixing mystical delicacy with understated atmospheres. Something less tangible than mere sound and melody, more…well, other.

And that is precisely what we find him doing here. “Inner Truth” has a simple message to convey – let go of the things that don’t serve any valuable purpose, reconnect to the world through love, and embrace the fundamental feelings that you know to be true. As the song moves between vocal charm and spiritual chant, it is as much this form of indirect communication that engages the listener, an open sonic book that, rather than take us by the hand and lead us to one specific conclusion, allows the listener to connect via emotion and empathy and intuition.

With Adrian Freedman’s gorgeous drifts of flute cascading over gentle guitar lines and piano refrains and Renato Anesi’s perfectly poised and purposefully positioned bass underpinning everything, this is a deft and delicate soundscape indeed.

If there was a need for music as a form of healing and hope, if ever there was a need for artists such as Michael Beck, if ever there was a time for music to be more than just entertainment and have real purpose, it is now.
