Bassist Michael D. Donnelly played in such London-based experimental rock bands as Delicate AWOL, Rothko and Elite Barbarian before striking out on his own with this, his disturbing first solo release.
I’ve Come to Love You Forever is an album of nightmares. Though there is melody in the basslines, it only serves to drive the eerie keyboards, noises and sparse percussion that mark the tracks. Children’s voices and the sound of old toys create a chilling, haunting quality fit for a horror movie soundtrack. These are cavernous soundscapes, deep and resonating with an ominous tone of fear, like the underground dwellings of creatures that rarely see sunlight, or empty mansions alive with the ghosts of memories.
It’s not post-rock, nor noise, nor dub, nor industrial, yet somehow it embodies all of these qualities to create something else – the world inside Michael D. Donnelly’s head. Take a trip and see how long you can last in his magnificent house of horrors.
