Touting influences of the fedora-wearing likes of Jason Mraz and Bruno Mars, Salt Lake City’s Richard Tyler Epperson is releasing his new album entitled Hourglass featuring the expected acoustic and likeable pop similar to the aforementioned pop stars. However, most of the instrumentals are performed by Epperson himself, and it adds a great homegrown charm to the record, and a more intimate atmosphere to the general mood.
Overall there is much more of an indie, quirkier feel to this entire album, and I have a suspicion it will appeal to those who may not even enjoy the commercial appeal of Mraz. Because his voice isn’t typical and neither like the monotonous polished throngs nor the overdone gruff roaring of the new folk revival but rather somewhere in the middle, the grit of his voice adds a unique dimension to his music.
On songs like “Where We Are” and “Around We Go,” Epperson shows off a gentle pop sensibility while displaying enough of an edge in his vocals to keep things interesting, and often his music comes off as both beautifully meandering and stirring at the same time. A perfectly hummable and enjoyable album, Hourglass is definitely worth a repeated listen and will be released April 8th.
