Midnight Snowball Fight - Attic (self-released)

5 August 2024

They say that you should write about what you know. So, the idea of a band writing about their first forays into music, a tale of building something from the ground up and stepping out into the artistic unknown with it is such a sensible thing to do, I’m surprised more bands don’t follow such a course. Autobio-alt-rock? I like it.

This DC outfit has a cool way of skirting several genres, garnering what they need from each but only partially committing to any of them. That way, they avoid the cliches, generic baggage, and expectations that come with each and weave their unique musical blend from only the good stuff.

In this case, the good stuff is robust rock grooves, smart indie riffs, chiming textures, lively tones, a slight alt-country twang, and no shortage of pop-infused infectiousness. It’s music forged between pop and a hard place, and it’s all the better for working with such attractive opposites.

Not only is “Attic” an accessible and fun song, but it is also a diary entry and memoir for the band. It is a love letter and vote of thanks to all the small venues that take a chance on bands just starting out on their sonic journey, all those who support such a scene, and just about anyone who is taking a chance on doing anything creative. They salute you all!

Midnight Snowball Fight hasn’t forgotten how this business works. The money at the top of the game is built on the efforts of passionate amateurs, break-even gig promoters, and venues championing a worthy cause. This song is their thank you to us, and this review, in return, is also my thank you to them. god bless you, sirs!
