Mister Rabbit - Soft Delusion (self-released)

20 April 2025

Blending hints of Brit-pop and classic indie sonics, not to mention a cool singer-songwriter meets full band sound, “Soft Delusion” is a great song. One that might reference some classic moments of music past, but which is nothing if not the sound of the here and now.

But it is not as simple as just trying to sound like your influences; it’s about referencing some of the sounds and styles you admire but bringing them together in such a way that the finished song is unquestionably all your own. And that is exactly what is happening here. Sure, the building blocks might be familiar in places, but the sonic architecture being built is all that matters. And the sonic architecture here is stunning.

With acoustic guitar nods to bands like The Cast and The Las and a song that Elvis Costello would pay good money for and which would have fitted into the more understated end of Soul Asylum’s Grave Dancer’s Union it’s a great song, (I might have said that already) one about learning to finally put the memory of a failed relationship behind you and move on.

Now, after all my talk of classic British bands and 90’s indie sounds, you would expect them to be based in The UK’s Manchester or Liverpool, rather than Canada’s Southern Ontario, but I guess that just reminds us of what a small and cross-pollinating place the world is in the modern, musical age.

So, a nod to the past, the perfect sound for today, and paving a way towards a bright new indie future…you can’t ask for more than that, can you?
