If you need things marked on the musical map or labeled with easy identifiers, it is somewhere between the gossamer delicacy of Dreampop and the modern Folktronica sound that you should look for MothBreath. But as I doubt you would find any two people who agree on what either of those genres actually means and where their sonic boundaries lay, I wouldn’t waste much time worrying about such pointless details.
Instead, you need to concern yourself with how great a song this is and, perhaps, like me, why you don’t already have this scintillating duo in your life or at least in your record collection.
“Brand New,” their message of the restorative power of nature runs on deft yet infectious beats, which form the groovesome heart of the song. On to this, they hang many mellifluous layers and gorgeous sonic textures – soulful shards of echo-infused guitar rhythms, rich vocal harmonies, and beguiling sonic motifs that flit and flurry through this sublime and subtle experience.
And, despite its drifting ways and heavenly harmonics, the song is still solid enough to make its way, Trojan Horse-like, into more mainstream realms, perhaps even smuggling past the self-appointed gatekeepers of fad and fashion and into the chart realms.
Imagine if this was the sound of mainstream music rather than the lowest common denominator, throwaway creations that have taken hold of popular music. Wouldn’t that be something?
