MothBreath - Freedom Machine (self-released)

19 April 2025

The world may have become an increasingly dark, difficult, entrenched, and unsympathetic place lately, but it’s great to see that some people are making music that extols the virtues of life’s simple pleasures. It is now that we need to immerse ourselves in them more than ever: hobbies and pastimes, small adventures that let us forget the turmoil, things that remind us who we are and what life is really about. Sometimes, it’s all about the small stuff.

“Freedom Machine” refers to the humble bicycle and its ability to provide escape, not to mention health and happiness. In the song’s gentle energy and its understated but unabated groove, you can see the wheels spinning along the tarmac, see the landscape racing past and feel the wind in your hair, and in its lyrics, you find nothing less than a celebration of the joy of the open road.

Inspired generally by a love of cycling and more specifically by Kirsty’s plan to cycle from the UK to Japan in 2020, a plan put to rest by the COVID pandemic, it is a song built on dream-pop finesse and folktronic ornateness, gorgeous banks of harmonies and floating, indie-pop infectiousness.

Music, the best music anyway, reflects its times. But, even as so many bands are making music that is overly earnest and self-important, writing slogans for their cause, rabble-rousing, or making dramatic calls for resolution, it is great to have bands like MothBreath to remind us that redemption and reward are often found in the most innocent of pursuits.
