If I have faced a certain problem with MothBreath’s previous singles, “Freedom Machine” and “Misty Blue,” then it is doubly the case with their latest, “Nothing Will Stay The Same.” But as problems go, it isn’t a bad one to face. And that problem, if it is even a problem, is that so richly wrought and deftly woven, so ornate and elegantly laced, so beguiling and bewilderingly beautiful is their music, it is difficult to know where to start when describing it to the listener. All music is best understood through hearing it, but rarely is that truer than here.
Terms such as indie or alternative rock hardly come close; dreampop perhaps helps, but it is to non-music-specific terms such as ethereal, celestial, or meditative that we need to turn to get to its essence, rather than more regular music handles.
“Nothing Will Stay The Same” is a heady blend of downtempo beat and understatement, gentle euphoria, and the ebb and flow of trip-hop energies, as much a feeling and emotion, a state of mind, as music itself. Soulful strings sweep and swoon through electronica-induced dreamstates, hushed yet unmissable vocals fill a canvas all of their own, and the words remind us that change is the only constant. Whether that is for the better or worse is inconsequential; the state of flux, change, and evolution is what the song is gently capturing here: the future is always arriving, and things will never be as they were. All we can do is embrace it, make the best of it, accept it, and build new versions of our lives around such fluctuations.
Of course, the one thing that doesn’t change is MothBreath’s ability to deliver the most effortlessly gorgeous, most beautifully consistent music with every new release.
