Mother Vulture - Slow Down (self-released)

5 February 2025

“Slow Down” is an aptly named song, one that reminds us in no uncertain terms that rock music doesn’t have to be fast and furious, velocitous and fast-paced; it can be slow and brooding, powerful and massive, and still get the job done. Not just get the job done but leave the listener with the feeling that they have just been knocked over by a run-away sonic truck. Did anyone get the license plate? No, I thought not.

If Mother Knows Best saw the band in turbo-frenzy mode, this latest single shows that they have more than one string to their bow and understand that there is more than one way to skin a cat, as the saying goes.

“Slow Down” might not be the fastest track to pass your way, but it is probably one of the biggest. It is the sort of song that when you play it, your surroundings feel darker as the song’s very presence blocks out the light—or perhaps its gravitational pull actually bends it! (Someone phone Professor Brian Cox for a more detailed assessment of the situation!) It’s that big.

But not just big, clever, too—a rare combination in the rock and roll world. There is something powerful and yet purposeful to be found as this song inches its way leviathan-like across the musical landscape, rearranging tectonic plates and carving new subduction zones as it goes.

Anyone can play fast, but it takes real skill to play this slowly and still make it feel as if the mechanics of the song could only be described using unfeasibly big numbers, complex diagrams and quantum mechanics!
