Mountain Climer - Paper Gowns (Four Lane Road Media)

19 March 2025

Despite the up-tempo, upbeat, up-and-at-‘em groove of the song, “Paper Gowns” has a very astute and ominous message running through it. Lyrically musing on the titular hospital paper gowns and the “doctors and machines,” it uses such imagery to underline the fact that life is fleeting, often cut even shorter by some of the choices that we make in our lives. Tempus…as they say, doesn’t half Fugit!

It’s a song that grew quickly yet organically in the studio, evolving from a slow-tempo ballad into the infectious lilt we now hear, thanks to a band of seasoned session players and producer Paul Mahern’s ability to find the best in every song.

And as a taste of Jeremy (Mountain) Climer’s forthcoming album, Before You Turn Out the Lights, it speaks volumes. If the song’s blends of country-rock groove and indie-rock know-how, Americana sonic drawl, and folky finesse don’t make you want to know more, then perhaps book yourself a check-up with the doctor as soon as you are able.

If nothing else, this song is a brilliant reminder that it is possible to write songs with serious subjects while pursuing an infectious sonic sound. While you might make deep and, perhaps, darker commentary with the lyrics, you can still set those ideas to music that will get the party started.

Opposites attract, man. But you don’t need me to tell you that.
