I love music with depth, and so this latest one from mozworth, a song “shaped by the rhythms of the Gulf Coast, the weight of mythology, and the search for answers in uncertain times,” and sonically blending surf-infused pop with Byrdsian psychedelic moves, as it ebbs and flows between folky understament and the roar of rock and roll at its finest, is going to keep me happy for more than a little while.
Having found references to the titular bird in Native American, Celtic, and Japanese myths, mozworth began to see it as a universal messenger between realms, connecting cultural ideas and an inspiration for the ability to have feet planted in more than one place, and of the ability to navigate through very different worlds.
And if the lyrics describe such duality, the music itself is also a collision of musical worlds, rising from a driving bass and swathes of raw guitar, and forming into a squalling sonic storm, before dissipating into more temperate sounds. And between these two sonic states, it ebbs and flows, sometimes propulsive and explosive, at others more restrained and calm.
It’s a blend of indie delicacy, rock muscle, psychedelic colour, and surf finesse. And if that is not the art of walking between worlds, I don’t know what is.
