At that point where pop crashes into indie (is that what they call alt-pop?), where the infectiousness of one mingles with the discerning cool of the other; that is where you find MT.Heads and their latest single, “Feel Alright.”
While it takes a smart band to be able to blend the opposite camps of pop commerciality and indie outsiderness, there are things going on here that eclipse even those deft moves. For it is not pop’s pace or indie’s attitude, nor even rock’s velocity or volume that the band uses to make their presence felt, but rather an understated groove, creating their dynamic more from the ebb and flow of sonic weight than anything as mundane as mere speed. This is a song built on poise rather than pace.
They then proceed to cover this masterfully mid-paced piece with squalling blues-rock guitars, crunching sonics, powerful beats, and depth-charge bass lines.
This isn’t just music for our time, a song for the here-and-now, something surfing the current zeitgeist. Bolted to such a sonic vehicle is a set of lyrics that are timeless or at least tell a timeless tale in the language of today. Have you ever been in a relationship that feels totally one-sided, that makes you suspect that you are the only one who is being honest, fair, or open? Yes? Well, you have just found your new anthem.
