This latest one from Mumbai based Music UnLtd. is one of those songs which, as a writer, you look forward to. As you can imagine, the day of the jobbing music writer is one where much of the time is spent writing about indie bands who want to be Arctic Monkeys or pop players emulating Ed Sheeran or rock bands trying (and failing) to capture the spark that made bands like Thin Lizzy so great, that I am always delighted when something different, something that has been thought about, something that I can wrap my pen around, drops in the review pile, and “IT CROSSED MY MIND” is precisely that.
There is something both balladic and slightly theatrical about the song, something which seems to head into more orchestral and orchestrated territory, thanks to the wandering ebbs and flows of the piano and the banks of strings that rise to join it, swirling and softening as they go. With just an unfussy but precise beat to drive things along and a bass line that connects the melody to this gentle, engine room energy, there is just enough music to frame Milin’s vocals perfectly and allow them to remain in the limelight, whilst creating an interesting sonic backdrop for the words to dance over.
“IT CROSSED MY MIND” is a hard song to pigeonhole, but all the best ones are. Perhaps something like progressive or modern chamber pop, cinematic or ambient indie might do the trick for those who need such assurances and demarcations. For the rest of us, all you need to know is that Music UnLtd. is a purveyor of highly original, wonderfully intriguing, mellifluous, and mercurial music, and that should be enough to pique the interests of any discerning music fan.Website
