Relationships are never easy, from the most transient to those dear to us, from the fleeting to the most fundamental, they all have the same things in common: they’re complex beasts; they need work; and they always come with difficulties that need managing, but they are also what makes us human, or at least alive. And that is what lies at the heart of this second single from MUTE TV.
‘Broken Drum’ quickly builds the requisite tension for such a difficult subject; that brooding bassline, that eerie, spiralling and perhaps sinister guitar riff, those complex drum fills – all create the perfect backdrop for a few vocal truths to be fired off over it.
As always, MUTE TV make a big sound, dense and delicious, sitting somewhere between alt-rock power and shoegaze density, and like all the best power-trios, it is the sound of each instrument firing on all cylinders; after all, when there are just three of you holding down the fundamental rock and roll sound – guitar, bass, drums, vocals – there is nowhere to hide; each player needs to be totally on it. ‘Broken Drum’ is the sound of a three-piece about as on it as any band ever was.
To use a cliché (and clichés are clichés for a reason, because they are true), MUTE TV make music that is big and clever, that perfect collision point where melody meets muscle, density dances deftly with dexterity, where grit and groove work perfectly together.
Difficult second single? Not a bit of it!
