Não confundir com - Cumprir qualquer propósito (Robalo Music)

5 April 2026

‘Cumprir qualquer propósito’ (‘Fulfill Any Purpose’), the latest statement from Lisbon‑based trio Não confundir com, resists easy categorization. Across its seven movements, the ensemble, vocalist Nazaré da Silva, alto saxophonist João Gato and double bassist Zé Almeida, constructs a sound world that feels forged in conversation, intuition and collective risk. The album is not a sequence of discrete pieces so much as a shifting ecology of sound, a suite of gestures, textures and intensities that negotiate structure without ever abandoning invention.

From the first seconds of “Não confundir com uma abertura a seco,” the listener is reminded that silence and sound are equally compositional forces for this group. The entry is deliberate: veering between vocal articulations that challenge conventional notions of lyricism and an alto saxophone that explores its upper registers without settling into comfort. Almeida’s double bass underpins the interaction, a presence that is at once anchoring and unpredictable. The piece establishes an unspoken premise, that every articulated line and breath holds potential for transformation.

As the album moves into “Não confundir com uma suite,” the trio’s dynamic becomes more apparent. Gato’s saxophone frames extended phrases that seem both plaintive and probing, while da Silva’s voice moves fluidly between timbral invention and almost chant‑like resonance. Almeida’s bass lines shift from bowed sonority to more percussive attacks, suggesting rhythm without ever committing to a steady tempo. The music feels deeply spatial, as though three listeners are in dialogue across a room and the listener is invited to eavesdrop.

“Não confundir com uma parte 2” feels like a distillation of the album’s core impulses. At just under four minutes, it captures the trio’s ability to construct dense architecture in a compact form. Here, da Silva’s voice becomes an instrument of texture as much as meaning, weaving in and out of Gato’s lyrical contours. Almeida’s double bass moves with an organic logic, shaping the space between melody and abstraction, creating resonance not only through pitch but through the sheer presence of sound.

Mid‑album, “Não confundir com uma vingança silenciosa” pushes further into dramatic expressionism. The piece lives in fluctuating dynamics; quiet passages become abrupt crescendos that announce themselves without warning. da Silva’s vocalizations range from breathy intonations to slices of guttural strength, while Gato’s saxophone lines explore intervals that feel like questions both asked and unanswered. The double bass, at times sweeping and at others brooding, shapes the emotional architecture of the piece without ever dictating it.

In its brevity, “Não confundir com um coral sónico” evokes communal resonance, voices and instruments intertwining to suggest a choir not bound to text but bonded through timbre. The effect is mesmerizing, a reminder that the trio’s work is as much about communal intent as individual performance.

By the time we reach “Não confundir com 4º segredo de Fátima a 2.75X,” the music feels unbound, operating in its own internal logic. Fragments of motifs reappear, refracted through new contexts, challenging the listener to reassess what has come before. Gato’s alto saxophone carries a spaciousness that contrasts with da Silva’s incisive vocal gestures, while Almeida’s bass seems to pulse from a deep, almost primordial source.

The final movement, “Não cumpriu o propósito de um final,” stands apart in its duration and ambition. Over eleven minutes, the trio negotiates a vast emotional terrain. Themes introduced earlier in the program return, sometimes distorted, sometimes illuminated. The piece feels like both culmination and departure; a reflection on the group’s collective language that also gestures toward spaces as yet unexplored.

Cumprir qualquer propósito is not an easy listen, but it is one that rewards attentive listening. Não confundir com has constructed more than a collection of improvised pieces; they have forged a sonic manifesto that embraces uncertainty while remaining deeply communicative, a testament to the power of listening as creative practice.
