You can always rely on London’s Near Death Experience to bring the groove. It’s what they do. It’s what they do so much better than most. But even by their own high standards and lofty sonic benchmarks, their new one, “Shake,” is a new musical high.
There is a double meaning at work here. With a title like “Shake,” it is easy to think that the word refers to the grooviness inherent in the track, a song whose perfect musical blends – funky rhythms, uplifting guitar, buoyant basslines and backbeats, and incredible acts of gratuitous sax – challenge anyone not to start shaking their thing immediately! The perfect title for such a song, it would seem.
But there is more to it than that. “Shake” is about those times in your life when you need to be shaken out of inactivity, given a well-meaning kick up the nethers, reenergized enough to follow your dreams, keep moving on, and reach for the stars.
As always, NDX, as their friends call them, artfully blends the familiar sounds of soul, R&B, and even a hint of disco into sassy and perfectly contemporary sonic forms. But for every nod to the past, there are two or more strides into a new musical future.
