This new single from Nils Lassen features a most excellent and quite unexpected mixing of musical minds, scattered sounds, and strange creative blends, but that is exactly how the musical world stays fresh and interesting. “Close Those Ocean Eyes” is a mercurial mix of crooner-era chamber pop, floating dream pop ethereality, neo-classical sophistication, cinematic themes and ambient loveliness.
It is on a sea of string washes and waves, musical tides that ebb and flow, a swell of scintillating sonics and shimmering tides of sound that the music floats, often feeling more like a lucid dream or an emotion made into sound than a song in the traditional sense. Or perhaps, given the themes of the song, a sea shanty that has been boiled down to its dream-like essence, cinematic and gentle soaring.
But, as one half of BlackieBlueBird Lassen knows his way around this fragile musical realm like few others, here capturing the sense of freedom and adventure, the idea of just catching the sea breeze and seeing where it takes you, part Homer’s The Odyssey, part Hemmingway’s The Old Man and the Sea.
The sense of freedom and destiny is palpable in this song, which seems fashioned by harnessing the sonic winds and forming them into this gentle and refreshing breeze of a song. It is not only a great song but a gorgeous first taste of Lassen’s solo album to come.
