I would put money on the fact that this is the first time a song has conjured images of the between-the-wars era, chanson, 90’s trip-hop, soul balladry, and electronic soundscaping all in around 3 minutes. Or put another way, who’s up for a slice of Edith Piaff meets Portishead! (There’s the one for the poster!)
But enough of the clever wordplay; “Losing You” deserves more than just journalistic juggling of words. Take a deeper look, and you realise it is something quite special. Built on trip-hop grooves and squelchy electronica, it uses that as a platform to deliver Daniella Goldfine’s gorgeous and effortless vocals, vocals that seem from another time, gentle and emotive orchestral sweeps, and all manner of beguiling sonics.
As much as you can pull such things apart and examine the mechanics, of course, that is not how music should be experienced, and this coming together of NUTRI3NT’s sensational soundscaping and Goldfine’s seductive voice is an experience indeed.
Both tipping its hat to the past and opening doors to an unexpected future, this is a genre-hopping masterpiece. As we know, the post-genre world we find ourselves in was designed for such adventure, yet so many music makers still cling to their old tribal allegiances and make music in their past heroes’ image. Few have fully embraced the wide range of possibilities of the border-free musical map… fewer still have done so with such grace and creativity as NUTRI3NT and Daniella Goldfine have here.
